LABOR FÜR TYPOGRAFIE — TYPOGRAPHY LAB

Layoutraster, Schriftwahl und Typografie, das klingt erst einmal trocken – aber stimmt das? Dient nicht das Raster als Grundlage für das visuelle Erzählen? Gibt es nicht den Rahmen vor, auf dem Geschichten präsentiert werden, und setzt es nicht die Schwerpunkte, die gutes Erzählen so nötig hat? Im Typolabor erforschen wir gemeinsam, was Handsatz mit der Rasterfindung zu tun hat, skizzieren per Hand und legen Papierstücke aus (auslegen: to lay out), um nach Laut und Leise, Lang und Kurz, Raum und Enge, Zentrum und Peripherie zu fragen. Neben einem Layoutraster entsteht eine typografisch durchdachte Umsetzung eines einfachen Projektes freier Wahl.

Layout grids, choice of typefaces and typography, this may sound uninspiring at first glance—but is that actually true? Do grids not serve as a basis for visual storytelling? Do they not provide a framework to the presentation of that story, and do they not help set an emphasis a narrative so desperately needs? At the Typography Lab, we explore the relationship of letterpress and grid composition, make sketches by hand and lay out pieces of paper (lay-out) to decide between Loud and Silent, Long and Short, Space and Narrowness, Center and Periphery. Besides a layout grid, a typographically implemented project of your choice is created.

Neben sanft dosierten themenbezogenen Inputs aus der Vorlesung »Überall ist Typografie« arbeiten wir an typografischen Konzepten für zwei konkrete Buchprojekte: Eine Rückschau der Klasse für Bewegtbild bei Prof. Stini Roehrs sowie eine Sammlung von Projekten und Arbeiten im Bereich Digital Education bei Prof. Daniel Hromada (Studierende aus diesem Kontext nehmen für 2 SWS am Kurs teil und erhalten 2 ETCS). Egal wie verrückt die Entwürfe werden: Hauptsache sie werden sauber formatiert, sodass ausgewählte Positionen dann auch reibungslos produziert werden können. Ziel des Kurses in zwei Gruppen ist mindestens ein Prinziplayout, das anhand von Beispielkapiteln die Umsetzung als Buch umfassend zur Schau stellt.

Besides a small dose of topic-related input from the lecture »Everywhere is Typography«, we work on typographic concepts for two book projects: A retrospect of the Moving Image Studio under Prof. Stini Roehrs and a collection of projects and works in the Digital Education subject area under Prof. Daniel Hromada (students from this context participate the course for 2 SWS and receive 2 ETCS). Regardless how crazy the layouts will be, it will only be insisted on proper formatting, so that selected positions can then go into a flawless production. Aim of the course in two groups is a conceptual layout draft, which can illustrate the future book layout at hand of example chapters.
